Alaska DOT launching weekly inspections made possible only with automated crowd-sourced imagery and AI analysis from Blyncsy

Thanks to Blyncsy’s AI-driven real-time detections from crowd-sourced dash camera images, Alaska Department of Transportation will be conducting weekly inspections around Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks. Detections include snow removal and maintenance, roadway asset inventory and condition assessment.

Solving Unique Challenges

The Alaska Department of Transportation has a monumental task; manage over 5,600 center line miles of roads and highways, a ferry system serving 35 communities and over 3,500 marine miles, 237 airports, and 839 public facilities while also dealing with some of the harshest conditions in any of the 50 states. Their stated goal is to “provide a safe and efficient transportation system for Alaska to thrive.” While the largest state in the union geographically, Alaska ranks 34th in state spending on transportation, with a FY2023 capital budget of just over $1.6B.

Weekly inspections in Anchorage & Fairbanks

Through the partnership with Alaska DOT, Blyncsy will conduct weekly assessments and detections for the following areas of interest:

  • Snow removal and maintenance — Blyncsy’s AI technology will detect whether pedestrian walkways have been cleared of snow
  • Street light outages — Blyncsy will survey all street lights to determine which ones are not operating correctly during nighttime hours.
  • Sign inventory — The AI technology in Blyncsy’s platform will detect damaged road signs, identify each by its MUTCD code, and provide a correlated retroreflectivity score.

Weekly inspections in Juneau

In the capital city, Blyncsy will perform the following detections:

  • Pavement condition — Blyncsy will conduct crack detection surveys including identifying the type of crack, pothole detection and build a Pavement Condition Index score for all roads.
  • Guardrail damage — By analyzing crowd-sourced dash camera images, Blyncsy can detect the exact location and severity of any damage to guardrails.
  • Sign inventory — The AI technology in Blyncsy’s platform will detect damaged road signs, identify each by its MUTCD code, and provide a correlated retroreflectivity score.
  • Street light outages — Blyncsy will survey all street lights to determine which ones are not operating correctly during nighttime hours.

Inspections on other Alaska roads

Outside of the three main population centers in Alaska, Blyncsy will be able to conduct these detections:

  • Sign inventory — The AI technology in Blyncsy’s platform will detect damaged road signs, identify each by its MUTCD code, and provide a correlated retroreflectivity score.
  • Street light outages — Blyncsy will survey all street lights to determine which ones are not operating correctly during nighttime hours.

Cost Savings

Because Blyncsy can crowd-source imagery from dash cameras already on Alaska roads, mounted on delivery and fleet vehicles, commercial trucks, and DOT trucks, the cost of conducting roadway inspection and asset inventory is a fraction of the cost of manual surveys; in some cases Blyncsy can represent a 90% savings over traditional methods.
